What To Say When Someone Has Lost A Pet

Do you know someone who has lost a pet?  If you’ve ever lost a pet of your own, you know that the hurt is almost more than any one person can bear. That’s why when you hear about another person who has lost their precious fur-baby; you hesitate and maybe want to stay away because it’s so hard to find the right words to say.  Please know that avoiding the subject or saying nothing could unintentionally fare worse because the grieving person usually needs to hear some comforting words. This may provide ideas of what to say when someone has lost a pet.Gus tags

The most important thing is to kindly check-in. Ask the person if he or she would like to talk. Some people need some initial quiet time and prefer to be left alone.  If this be the case, then gently let the friend know you will be available when he or she is ready.  If the person says he or she would like to talk, just remember to be gentle and empathetic.

Even if you have never been a pet owner, remember that people who are pet owners find great happiness in having a pet; their animals become like their kids, especially for couples who never could have children. Once the pets pass away, they are missed terribly. For some, the grief will be temporary. For others, grief can be unbearable and can last a long time. Sadly, there’s no quick fix for making the pain go away.  After the pet has passed away, the family’s routines will change, and little things can trigger the sadness that may be extremely overwhelming. The family will miss the morning snuggles from their furry family member. They will no longer be greeted by a wagging tail, a soft purr, or a cheerful tweet when they return home at the end of each day.

During the grievous time, words of wisdom from others can surely help, and they mean so much. Words of comfort have a way of helping those who are experiencing a loss so they know they’re not alone. They don’t take away the pain, but knowing it’s something others have gone through can be slightly comforting.

The following are some ideas that we’ve put together to help you with things you can say without sounding hokey or disconnected.

  1. Even if you don’t have much to say, showing that you care can make a big difference.
  2. Offer your sympathy and support. Even if it feels awkward, give your friend a call and listen.
  3. Share your own positive memories of your good friend’s animal (recount them out loud).
  4. I’m so sad to hear of your pup’s passing. He was such a good boy. Please let me know if what I can do to help.
  5. We’re sorry for the loss of your dear, Fluffy. I can’t even imagine the pain you are going through right now. Let me know how I can help you during this difficult time.
  6. It is hard to imagine what it feels like to have lost your fur-baby. I am at a loss for words to say. I want you to know that I have you and your family in my prayers, and I’m here for you.
  7. You have every right to feel the way you do and I know it is so hard for you right now. Just know that I’m here for you.
  8. I can’t imagine what you’re feeling. I may not have the perfect words, but I’m here to listen.
  9. Let me know if there is anything I can do. I mean it, please let me know.
  10. Maybe do not say anything, just be present and let the person know you care.
